Brexit, the next week will be a “decisive” week for negotiation between London and Brussels

June 30 it the deadline for Brexit to reach the final round of negotiations with the EU. Before that, the UK and the EU can still negotiate whether to extend the transition period. The UK will remain subject to relevant obligations as an EU member before the deadline of the transition period. The British side is concerned about having to participate in the European fiscal stimulus plan in the wake of the novel coronavirus crisis.

The topic of this negotiation of the two parties is to make a decision on whether to extend the transition period until the December 31st of this year. This new week of discussions, which will foreshadow the “no-deal”? or will it, on the contrary, make it possible to lay the foundations for an agreement between Britain and the EU. The first three rounds of negotiations confirmed the deadlocked. “We actually have five months left to negotiate, November and December to be spent on ratification by the European Parliament. It is possible, but it is very constrained”, the EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier said. At the same time, he warned British side that if they do not change their previous positions, agree to a “level playing field” and did not undercut the EU regulations, the EU and the UK will not reach any agreement and accused the UK of choosing only what benefits them in the European single market.

David Frost, the chief negotiator of Boris Johnson’s government, assured the British representatives on May 28 that a constructive plan would be put forward, but that time for agreement is still out of reach. But obviously, the British side has no intention of extending the transition period. The British side will refuse even if the European Union requests.

The Covid-19 has delayed discussions on the London and Brussels, but it has certainly not shaken the belief that Britain will leave the EU on time. Johnson is worried that the extension of the transition period will force the UK to join the European fiscal stimulus plan. And he wants to finish negotiations as soon as possible in order to focus on the economic recovery of this country.
