Amazon France suffers another setback after being forced to close

2000! This is the number of signatures that the petition now against Amazon’s proposal to build a new logistics center in Fournès. Which is located next to the A9 highway between the southern cities of Nimes and Arles. The new logistics center will be one of the three largest warehouses in Europe.

The number of opponents continues to grow. For residents and businesses in the local community, they have joined forces to oppose the plan from the first day they learned of the plan. In addition, the vice-president of the departmental council Patrick Malavieille and other environmentalists also join the team of against the plan for the purpose of preserving the natural landscape because the site of the new warehouse close to be less than 9 km from the famous Pont de Gard bridge.

In an effort to protect local micro-businesses and local industry, Councilmember Delphine Bartho has tabled an urgent proposal to the local parliament on June 2 to against Amazon’s expansion plan in order to protect local trade from unfair competition. The proposal pointed out that the eight-week quarantine has already cost local stores 86% of their turnover, while online e-commerce sales in April Up 83%, the growth in e-commerce sales was not equally distributed, with the vast majority of those sales going to things like amazon Such multinational giants.

Except being a threat to local stores, the arrival of Amazon is also a major challenge for local e-commerce. Amazon France, which has adopted a monopoly competition strategy, has set up more than 20 warehouse centers in France and plans to double its warehousing capacity by 2021. Which means that 9 new sorting centers will be added.

Amazon France promised the local government that the new logistics center will bring 150 jobs to the local area now, and the number of employees will reach 600 in 2 years. The plan will generate a substantial return for the local finance.

The District Administrative Court of Nimes has received 11 petitions to cancel the construction plan, and the local builder ARGAN has also filed an arbitration with the court for possible conflicts of interest in land sales caused by the plan. At present, the construction of the new warehouse has been suspended and can only be resumed after the arbitration is concluded. The construction period of the new warehouse will take approximately another year to complete.

We will continue to follow the French Amazon and bring you the latest relevant information.
