Article n°16 of the EPR series: 2022 update on battery contribution scale

by | May 5, 2022 | EPR

We previously talked about the type of batteries under the EPR jurisdiction and what producers must do to comply to the law. In this article we will show you the 2022 contribution scale regarding batteries.

More than 1.5 billion batteries are sold every year on the French market, says the French Ministry of the environment. Which is more or less equal to 270 000 tons. Portable batteries used in households and companies represent almost the entirety of this type of products sold on the market. However, they only represent about 15% of the total weight of such products which are destined to be recycled. This contrast shows that the heaviest batteries are only used for industrial purposes.

To summarize Article n°15, battery producers either create their own individual scheme of join a collective scheme, also named Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO). PROs will collect and dispose of battery producers’ battery waste in exchange of a contribution. Hereinafter the 2022 scale contribution:

Types of batteries Contribution in € excl. VAT per Kg
Alkaline (Stick, Farm, Block, Zinc Air…) 0,350
Zinc Carbon (Stick, Farm, Block…) 0,700
Primary Lithium (Stick and button cells) 2,230
Button Cell (Silver Oxyde, Alkaline, Zinc Air…) 3,500
Ni-MH 0,175
Lithium Ion 0,470
Lithium Polymer & others lithium rechargeable 0,500
Lead 0,515
Ni-Cd 0,975
